What is my undertone?
Choosing the right foundation color starts with your undertone. Many people only look at whether they are fair or dark, but the undertone — the color that shines through from your skin — determines just as much whether a foundation suits you well or is incorrect.
What is an undertone?
Your skin color consists of two layers: your surface skin color (light, medium, dark) and your undertone. The undertone does not change if you get tanner or paler. There are three undertones:
- Cool — pink, red, or bluish undertone
- Warm — golden, yellow, or peachy undertone
- Neutral — a mix of cool and warm, no clear dominant color
How do you discover your undertone?
Test 1: Look at your veins
Turn your wrist over and look at the color of your veins in daylight.
- Blue or purple — cool undertone
- Green — warm undertone
- Blue and green mixed — neutral undertone
Test 2: Gold or silver?
Which metal suits you better? Gold looks better on a warm undertone, silver on a cool undertone. Do both look good? Then you probably have a neutral undertone.
Test 3: What does the sun do to your skin?
- You tan quickly and rarely burn — warm undertone
- You burn quickly and tan with difficulty — cool undertone
- You sometimes burn but also tan — neutral undertone

Frequently asked questions
Can my undertone change?
No, your undertone is stable and does not change due to sun, season, or age. However, your surface skin color may become lighter or darker, meaning you sometimes need a different foundation shade.
What if I am between two shades?
Then choose the lighter shade if you have a cool undertone, and the warmer shade if you have a warm undertone. Or order both shades as testers and compare them at home in daylight.
Is a neutral undertone rare?
No, many people have a neutral undertone. The advantage is that both cool and warm shades can suit you well.
