Which sunscreen for eczema or very sensitive skin?

Advice on safe sun protection for easily irritated skin

Choosing sunscreen with eczema or hypersensitive skin is a challenge. Many sunscreens contain chemical UV filters, fragrances, or preservatives that can irritate the skin. Yet, sun protection is especially important for sensitive skin.

Chemical vs. mineral UV filters

Chemical filters are absorbed by the skin and can cause irritation, redness, or itching in sensitive skin.

Mineral filters (zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) sit on top of the skin and reflect UV radiation. Much more suitable for sensitive or eczema-prone skin.

Choice for eczema: always a mineral UV filter.

What to look for in sunscreen for eczema?

  • No fragrance — common trigger for eczema
  • No alcohol — further dries out the skin
  • No chemical UV filters — opt for zinc oxide or titanium dioxide
  • No preservatives like parabens or MIT
  • A rich or protective base — eczema skin needs extra hydration

Applying sunscreen with eczema

  • Apply to unaffected, calm skin — consult your doctor first during an active flare-up
  • Apply your day cream first, wait until absorbed, then apply sunscreen
  • Use generous amounts — applying too little significantly reduces the protection factor
  • Reapply every 2 hours when exposed
