Advice on safe washing without perfume, irritants or skin reactions
Regular detergents contain perfume, optical brighteners and chemical enzymes that can cause problems for sensitive skin, eczema or contact allergies. Laundry strips are a popular alternative — but here too: not every laundry strip is suitable for sensitive skin.
What are laundry strips?
Laundry strips are thin, soluble sheets of concentrated detergent. You throw one or two strips in with your laundry — they dissolve in water and clean your clothes. Advantages: no plastic bottle, compact, light and easy to dose.
What to look for in laundry strips for sensitive skin?
Avoid:
- Perfume or fragrance — even "natural perfume" can react with sensitive skin
- Optical brighteners — can cause skin irritation, especially with eczema
- MIT or CMIT — strong preservatives, known allergens
- Sulfates (such as SLS or SLES) — can dry out the skin
Choose:
- Fragrance-free — also no "natural" fragrances
- Dermatologically tested or recommended for eczema
- Free from optical brighteners
- Biodegradable
Extra tips for washing with sensitive skin or eczema
- Wash at 40°C or lower

Frequently asked questions
Are laundry strips better than liquid detergent for eczema?
Not by definition — it depends on the composition. Laundry strips have the advantage of being easier to dose.
Can I use laundry strips if I have a perfume allergy?
Only if they are completely fragrance-free — always read the ingredient list.
What is the best washing temperature for eczema?
Wash at 40°C or lower. Exception: bedding can be washed at 60°C to kill dust mites.
