How to Find the Right Foundation Shade
Follow these steps to do it yourself at home

Step 1: How to find your own undertone
In addition to determining your complexion, determining your undertone is very important. The right undertone in your foundation ensures that your skin does not become orange or gray.
An important step is therefore to know the undertone of your skin, divided into three types: Cool, Warm or Neutral
No matter how much your skin can change in color, from being in the sun or even a spray tan, everyone has a consistent undertone. Knowing what it is can make choosing makeup easier.
| Check your neck First, look at the color of your neck and décolleté. Why? Your face and shoulders get much more exposure to the sun, so your skin tone changes throughout the year. This makes it harder to determine your true undertone based on these areas. The neck and décolleté offer a much better undertone. Look at the veins in your wrist You can also look at the veins in your wrist. This may sound strange, but it is effective. Your vein color shows your authentic, natural color tones, making it a way to figure out your undertone. Lift your hand to your face and look at your wrist. What obvious color are your veins? Purple or blue Greener (maybe even a little yellow) Neither (in between) |
Knowing this, read on to discover your perfect color match.
Cool undertone (pink or rosy)

Does this sound like you:
-
- Just like a 'real royal', your veins are purple or blue
-
- In the summer you often use sunscreen - because your skin burns easily
-
- Your skin doesn't really tan - that's why you like a touch of bronzer on your cheeks
-
- Your eyes are blue, gray or green
-
- Your hair is blond, brown or black
If this sounds familiar, you probably have a cool undertone, which is important for knowing how to find the right foundation shade. With less melanin in your skin, your skin has a soft, sometimes peachy or porcelain appearance.
What someone with a cool undertone should wear and/or avoid
For a cool undertone, neutral and light colors with pink undertones will enhance your radiant, natural beauty.
Avoid overly yellow or dark shades that can give an uncomfortable, orange tint to your beautiful complexion.
A suitable selection for a Cool undertone:
Foundations Cool
Blush Cool
Bronzers Cool
Warm undertones (Olive to yellow)

Does this sound like you:
-
- Your veins are green or even a little yellowish
-
- Your skin does not burn easily, even if you are in the sun for a short time, you tan quickly
-
- You have amber or brown eyes
-
- Your hair is 'strawberry blonde', chestnut brown or black
If this sounds familiar, you probably have a warm undertone. That means you have higher levels of melanin in your skin, which makes you tan easily in the sun.
What someone with a warm undertone should wear and/or avoid
As someone with warm undertones, you’ll look great in espresso-like shades (think delicious café lattes or cappuccinos) and shades with a yellow or gold base, which will give you a sun-kissed look. Avoid dark copper tones, which can look more orange.
A suitable selection for a Warm undertone:
Foundations Warm
Blush Warm
Bronzers Warm
Neutral undertone (None of the above, right in the middle)

Perhaps none of the above descriptions fit you. You don't tan easily, but your skin doesn't burn easily either.
Also, you did the vein test and found that your veins were an intermediate color.
This is not a bad sign!
It simply means you are neutral. In fact, with fewer underlying colors to consider, neutral undertones have the easiest time finding the perfect foundation.
A suitable selection for a Neutral undertone:
Foundations Neutral
Blush Neutral
Bronzers Neutral
Step 2: Choose makeup for your color
Now that you have a better idea of what makeup will look fantastic on your face, you can start testing colors based on the results.
Do you know if you have a light, medium or tan skin tone? Then choose a few colors to order in sample size (ideally 2 - 3) of the makeup that matches your skin tone, determined above.
Step 3: How to Test Makeup Colors at Home
Once the sample choice of makeup has arrived, you can start testing which color is your perfect match. If you have chosen multiple colors, the chances of finding your match are higher:
-
- Place a quantity of powder in the lid of the jar (first remove the label on the sieve lid located in the jar).
-
- Using a circular motion, dip the bristles of the kabuki brush into the powder and apply to the jawline.
-
- If necessary, give the minerals some time to become one with the skin. If the color blends in nicely with your own skin color, you have a match.

The most common mistake when applying makeup foundation
Foundation should be so natural that it is not noticeable. (That is why it is so important to know your undertone.)
Even if you want to be more tanned or 'more' of a certain shade, applying that 'dream color' will not give you the look you want. That foundation will look fake and too obvious.
Instead, we recommend you embrace that gorgeous complexion you have. Your skin color is absolutely perfect. How do you find the right foundation color? Look only for makeup that will enhance its beauty.
Q! Do I need different makeup for different seasons?
If you tan particularly easily, your skin may have a completely different shade from summer to winter.
One method is to try a few colors. One might work better in the winter - and another when the sun comes out again.
If you fall somewhere in between, some makeup enthusiasts will combine the colors – mixing a little from each pot together to get just the right middle shade.
Luckily, mineral makeup colors are very forgiving because the powder adapts to your skin. You could probably wear one color today and another tomorrow - both will adapt to your skin as long as the makeup is the right undertone!
